Just days after the country’s First Lady launched a campaign especially against sexual assault on girls, a high court in Freetown has sentenced to TWO DAYS a 70-year-old man convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl. The man, a watchman for his victim’s parents, will walk free on Wednesday. It’s not clear why the lenient sentence, but sources following the case say the judge had cast doubt over the man’s mental state. However, he was never put through any psychiatric test by the court. The sentence has drawn rage from gender rights activists who say it’s reason, if anyone needs it, why predators seem to be on the prowl. – Umaru Fofana
