The Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Rahman Swarray, has assured SLAJ that the repeal of the Criminal Libel Law will happen soon.
Speaking to the new Executive of SLAJ during a courtesy call on his ministry last Thursday, Swarray revealed that internal opposition to the repeal of the law has finally waned.
“At the last Cabinet sub-committee meeting we made a very strong case and we had a resounding approval from our colleagues who initially were opposed to a repeal,” said Swarray.
further assured that the repeal document will be among the first set of
legislations (along with the Sexual Offences Act) to go to Parliament
when the legislative house resumes sittings.
“The repeal is going to happen soon. His Excellency President Bio is committed to his word and I am still hopeful he will have this as part of his message to the next UN General Assembly,” said Swarray.
He added: “Who doesn’t want to be remembered for repealing the Criminal Libel Law?”
