In what has been described as an unprecedented move, the Sierra Leone Monuments and Relics Commission has commenced a guided tour of Bunce Island with Schools in Freetown.

The Heritage Club of Methodist Girls High School toured the historic edifice on Thursday October 17, 2019.

Led by Tour Guide, Francis Musa Momoh, the children saw the ruins of Bunce Island first hand while acknowledging the traumatic experiences of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

The visit was part of the education and outreach component of a project to restore the Island. Funded by the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) the project will help in restoring some of ruins from further degradation and deterioration.

Bunce Island, a slave castle in Sierra Leone remains one of the most authentic testaments to the harsh realities of the trading in slaves that characterized the better half of the 16th century.
