THE GOVERNMENT OF SIERRA LEONE MUST ACT TO ENSURE A PEACEFUL RERUN OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
Campaign for Human Rights and Development International-CHRDI is appalled by the spiralling wave of violence following the March 7, 2018 elections.
The upcoming presidential rerun election in Sierra Leone were meant to enable political participation by its citizens, to renew the democratic legitimacy of their political leaders and to strengthen social cohesion.
However, in the light of recent incidents of political violence, the rise of hate speech and prevailing tensions, we emphasize the importance of all those involved in the process to commit themselves to good conduct during and after the election. We at CHRDI also call on political supporters to remain peaceful and refrain from any incitement to violence.
CHRDI notes that the worst affected are vulnerable groups, especially women, children and persons with disabilities. We hereby condemn in the strongest terms possible the protests and brutal crackdown that has led to loss of life and damage to properties . The constitution of Sierra Leone, Chapter 2- Section 4 states that “The State shall protect and defend the liberty of the individual, enforce the rule of law and ensure the efficient functioning of Government services”.
We urge those dissatisfied with the outcome of the elections to process their grievances through the prescribed avenues of the law. We equally urge law enforcement agencies to uphold the rule of law in dealing with citizens.
CHRDI is urging the oversight Authority of the Independent Police Complaints Board (IPCB), to investigate all alleged cases of brutality and human rights abuse by the police with a view of prosecuting the perpetrators.
CHRDI also urges the Sierra Leonean authorities to put an immediate stop to the harassment of and attacks against supporters of political parties, civil society activists, NEC officials and to take effective action to hold to account those responsible for past abuses.
CHRDI calls on the Sierra Leone authorities to ensure a fair and independent trial in the Electoral cases.
The Sierra Leone National Electoral Commission should organise and oversee the rerun election in a fully transparent manner, and ensure an increased transparency of voter tallying.
