Sierra Leone Women’s Under-20 team has progressed to the last eight (quarter finals) of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, France 2018 qualifiers after Tunisia withdrew from the competition due to reasons unknown.
The Sierra Leone team was scheduled to play the first leg in Tunis on September 15 with the return leg in Freetown due two weeks later.
According to a letter from the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) dated August 23rd and signed by the Competitions Director, Shereen Arafa, the fixtures of both legs between Sierra Leone and Tunisia have been canceled.
“We regret to inform you that the team of Tunisia withdrew from the Africa preliminaries FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, France 2018 qualifiers. Consequently, the above matches are canceled and Sierra Leone team is qualified for the next round,” the letter stated.
Sierra Leone will now play the winner between Guinea and Cameroon in the Second Round of the qualifiers with the first leg set for November 3rd and the return leg two weeks later.
Meanwhile, the Morocco Football Federation has invited the Sierra Leone national U-20 women’s team for a friendly encounter scheduled for August 26/27 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
A 30-man delegation is expected to leave the shores of Freetown on August 25 and return on the 31st.
