Kono, Friday September 13 2019 – The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Prof. Aiah Gbakima received a grand reception on Friday at the Fachima Hall in Koidu City where he commissioned brand new school buses on behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone.
The fifty (50) school buses recently procured by the government were comissioned simultaneously across the country ahead of the commencement of the new academic year.
The people of Kono welcomed the three (3) buses allocated to that part of the country amid drumming, singing and dancing as a show of appreciation over the government’s support for free quality education.
Minister Gbakima officially handed over the buses to the Mayor of Koidu City at an auspicious accasion attended by stakeholders within and outside the district including Paramount Chiefs, the Koidu City Mayor, District Administrators, representatives from the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU), Conference of Principals, government ministers, teachers, parents and pupils.
According to district stakeholders, this is the first time that Kono District is receiving government school buses to support education.
While handing over the buses to the people of Kono, the Minister called on all to judiciously use them.
He cautioned the drivers to serve as role models to the pupils using the buses. He advised them not to use the buses for any other purpose than what they are meant for.
He urged all stakeholders to take ownership by ensuring the proper use of the buses.
Prof. Gbakima described the commissioning of the buses as another major undertaking by the government towards the free quality education goal.
He assured the audience that President Bio will always deliver on his promises as a responsible and caring leader.
The Mayor of Koidu City, His Worship, Komba Sam applauded the government for fulfilling another promise to the people of Kono.
He assured the Minister that his administration will ensure judicious use of the buses, noting that a monitoring committee has already been formed to that effect.
