Dozens Of Soweis Handed In Their Razors For A New Life

Today in Port Loko, dozens of FGM cutters, known locally as Soweis, handed in their razors for a new life. For the first time in the country dozens of girls were initiated into the Bondo Society without being circumcised. BONDO WITHOUT BLOOD, is how prominent lawyer and activist, Yasmin Jusu-sheriff referred to it in her keynote speech, saying it’s a “wonderful thing”. Pioneered by Rugiatu Nenneh Koroma, the ceremony continues on Sunday and the initiates will be in the shrine for two weeks being trained to become good wives and mothers when they grow up. Details on BBC radio, tv and online next week.
