CHRDI And FIU-SL Sign MOU
Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the Financial Intelligence Unit Of Sierra Leone (FIU-SL) as way of building up networks with likeminded institutions like FIU and ACC in the fight against financial crimes.
Chief Executive of CHRDI, Abdul M. Fatoma, said that money laundering and terrorist financing have been identified as major threats to Sierra Leone and the international financial services community, adding that corruption is often associated with organised crime, money laundering and on many occasions, the financing of terrorism.
FIU Director Mr M K Konneh, expressed satisfaction over the mutual cooperation between the two organisations and commended CHRDI on their good track record in fighting Financial Crime through public advocacy in Sierra Leone
As an organisation which has a track record in the fight against corruption, CHRDI believes that endemic, bribery and corruption can threaten laws, democratic processes and basic human freedoms, impoverishing states and distorting free trade and competition.
The two organizations expressed their intention to cooperate within the scope of their mandates and sphere of competences to achieve the following:
1. The Anti-Money Laundering Regulation and SupervisionCo-ordination group will have regular meetings to monitor the operation of the AML/CFT regulatory regime for financial sectors and share information and insights on regulatory and supervisory issues on AML/CFT Act 2012. Particularly, those which may have a cross-sectorial impact.
2. Information is to be provided by each party to the other party in accordance with applicable laws and for the purposes of assisting the other parties in the exercise of their powers under the AML.
