As Bar Association Pays Courtesy Call, CJ Warns Lawyers

The executive members of the Sierra Leone Bar Association on today’s date Thursday 10th, January 2019, paid courtesy call to His Lordship the Hon. Chief Justice of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Hon. Justice Desmond B. Edwards (JSC) at his chambers at Law Court Building, Siaka Steven Street, Freetown.
The President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, Basita Michael (Mrs.) said, the essence of the visit was to congratulate the Hon. Chief Justice on his appointment and approval as Chief Justice of the Republic of Sierra Leone. She further stated that her Association is determined to collaboratively work with the Judiciary in ensuring expeditious trial and other pending issues that will enhance effective justice delivery are addressed.
The President and her team among other issues, appealed to the Hon. Chief Justice to continue rebuilding public trust in the Judiciary and to ensure that the newly approved and popularized Bail Regulation is enforced to the fullest. The Vice President of the Bar called on the Hon. Chief Justice to institute the senior advocate committee as stated in the Legal Practitioners Act 2000, as it is in other jurisdictions in the sub-region.
He promised the Hon Chief Justice that his association will effectively work with the Judiciary of Sierra Leone and will give their fullest support as and when necessary.
The Hon. Chief Justice appreciated the executive and the entire membership of the Sierra Leone Bar Association for what he described as thoughtful move by the executive and promised to work with them for the attainment of effective justice delivery in the country.
The Hon. Chief Justice said, expeditious trial can be achieved when the defense and prosecution counsel together with litigants effectively and faithfully work with the Judiciary to secure conviction or otherwise. “I have instructed my judges and magistrates to strike out any matter before them in which lawyers and litigants are reluctant to cooperate with them. I have also issued a Memorandum of Understanding affirming that all courts in the country commence sitting at 9am from Monday to Friday and on Saturday as and when necessary”. Hon. Chief Justice Edwards maintained.
