ACC CARRIES OUT TARGETED RAIDS AT DEEP WATER QUAY.
The past two weeks has seen one of the most sporadic raid actions by the ACC Intelligence and Investigators targeted at revenue generating points like the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Cline Town and check points.
According to report emanating from reliable sources close to the ACC, for months, the ACC had been surveillance the operations of the Customs Department of the Ports, particularly the vehicles, container and auction sections and noticed that many of the staff were involved in bribery, deliberate undervaluation, unjustified waivers, racketeering and abuse of office.
The raid over a period of two weeks has led to several arrests of personnel of Ports security, several customs staff and their collaborators. Several are being held in custody at CID including the supervisor at the Vehicles section, Mr. Sow, Madam Agnes Banya and Mr. Acmad Karim. All are accused of bribery and impeding investment contrary to the ACC Act. For the past several days, their lawyers and families have been trying to secure their release but the Commissioner has refused bail and they remain in custody. Their family members can be seen crowding before the commission premises throughout this week.
Another area under investigation is the auction sections at both the Ports and the SLRA. The head of the auction section at the SLRA is currently under arrests as well.
Following these targeted raids on revenue generating points like check points, ports, SLRA, etc, and arrests, the NRA has recorded the highest revenue ever generated in a week throughout its history, which many believe, has been catalyzed by the proactive ACC Action at NRA revenue generating points in the country – a whopping 185 Billion Leones in 5 days!
I will bring you updates as development on these really great news coming from the ACC unfolds.
