Ahead of WAFU Under 17 Tournament… Sierra Leone 29-man Delegation Departs for Senegal

A 29-man delegation headed by Mr Ali Badara Tarawallie – an Executive Committee Member of the Sierra Leone Football Association has left Freetown on Friday, September 7 to compete in this year’s West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Under 17 tournament in Dakar, Senegal.

Sierra Leone has been placed in Group A alongside host, Senegal and Guinea Bissau in a 9-nations tournament that will commence with a mandatory scheduled MRI Test.
Sierra Leone will have its test on Saturday between 9:00 and 14:00 hrs at the IMODSEN Medical Center in Dakar.

Senegal and Guinea Bissau will play in the opening ceremony on September 9, while Sierra Leone will open its campaign against Guinea Bissau two days later.

According to the competition format, the nine countries have been drawn into three groups of three teams each. The leader of each group and the best runner-up go straight to the semis after the group stage.

The Sierra Leone Under 17 team will qualify for the CAF Under 17 tournament in Tanzania next year if they progress to the tournament last two.

Shortly before their departure at the Lungi International Airport, Head coach, Tito Cole expressed optimism that his boys would make Sierra Leone proud at the end of the tourney.

“We are going to Senegal to compete and not just to make up the numbers. We will not underestimate any team and we are sure of returning with glory. This team is highly motivated, mentally stable and physically fit for the challenges ahead. To God be the glory,” coach Tito Cole said.

This is the first time Sierra Leone is taking part in a U-17 qualifiers since 2012.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Sports, Kai Lawrence Mbayo and the Deputy Director of Sports, Lamin Sesay are expected to join the squad before Sierra Leone’s first match on September 11.
